SAN DIEGO, CA — January 20, 2010 — A.P.Unix has announced the release of its next generation Self Service Appliance. According to John McDonnell, CEO of A.P.Unix, “Our next generation solid state appliance provides a significant differentiator for us in the industry. We are now able to offer our customers the most reliable, robust, and cost effective solution in a single platform appropriate for both self service kiosks and digital signage.” The platform consists of A.P.Unix's Embedded Kiosk OS that is stored on a solid state memory chip which replaces the unreliable disk drive found in most kiosk and digital signage CPUs. “The embedded CPUs we use for both kiosk and digital signage applications resemble appliances more than computers”, says Peter H. Berens, CTO of A.P.Unix. He goes on to add “If you think of the maintenance and reliability profile of a consumer appliance such as a Tivo DVR versus that of a typical Windows desktop PC, you can easily see how this new technology will not only allow our customers to continue to benefit from record up times and reliability, but also save them substantial sums of money over the long run.”
A.P.Unix's solid state operating system is based on an embedded version of Linux crafted by A.P.Unix. According to Berens “This newest base line version of Linux we have used to create our embedded Kiosk OS is by far the most reliable and stable, even by Linux standards which far exceed those of the most common other commercial platforms.” A.P.Unix adds its own proprietary device drivers to this Solid State OS to support all of the peripherals common in a self service deployment such as touch screens, magnetic stripe readers, bar code scanners, cash and coin acceptors, cash and coin dispensers, cash recyclers, and thermal and photographic printers. This “patent applied for” process is unique in the Self Service industry to A.P.Unix. A.P.Unix has targeted this OS to its own small embedded CPU board which it plans to use across all future kiosk and digital signage deployments. This same embedded Kiosk OS will also run unaltered on a wide variety of other hardware which A.P.Unix provides its customers such as hand held tablets for mobile self service deployments.
